Australia’s biggest cane toad control event will be aiming to be a game changer for Cane Toad management and Habitat groups around Brisbane and beyond are leading the charge.
The Cane Toad Bust is a community-based, environmental initiative to work together to track, catch and go some ways to control as many cane toads as possible in local areas.
The cane toad was introduced into Australia in the 1930s from Hawaii and was released in Queensland as a biological control for beetle pests of sugar cane,
Now a pest, the toads have been linked to the decline and extinction of several native predator species in the Northern Territory and Queensland, including the northern quoll. They contain a poisonous toxin that is strong enough to kill most native animals that normally eat frogs or frog eggs, including birds, other frogs, reptiles and mammals.
Two of the Enoggera Catchments bushcare groups are taking part in this year's 2024 Great Cane Toad Bust to stop the spread and damage in our local areas.
Anyone over the age of 10 years old can attend this FREE outdoor event and you’ll be collecting cane toads using rubber gloves and placing them in buckets to be humanely euthanised.
If you would like to join in the Bust, two of the local Habitat Groups getting involved in this year's Cane Toad Bust will be starting the chase at:
Wittonga Park Bushcare Group, The Gap on Sunday 14 January 2024 from 6 to 8 pm.
Davidson Street Bushcare Group, Ashgrove on Friday 19 January 7 to 8 pm.
Did you know that there are over 160 volunteer Habitat Brisbane groups that undertake a variety of other Landcare activities including:
weed removal
revegetating with locally native plants
mulching
citizen science projects
conducting flora and fauna surveys
drawing people together to build community partnerships and friendships
hosting community planting days and open days.
