The Godmother - Film Review (Alliance Francaise French Film Festival 2021)
My regular readers know that I am a Francophile: a lover of all things French. I adore the food, the wine, the fashion, the perfume and French cinema. They all have that certain
je ne sais quoi. So I was excited to be invited to attend an exclusive preview of
The Godmother (
La Daronne) at the Palace Barracks cinema.
Merci to Palace cinemas.
Superb and multi award-winning French actress Isabelle Huppert (a French icon, if ever there was one) stars brightly in
The Godmother (
La Daronne). In this comedy, she portrays Patience Portefeux (the Godmother of the title), a middle-aged interpreter for the Paris Police Headquarters. Patience studied Arabic at uni and has a PhD. She is 20 years a widow and is in a relationship with the Chief of Police. Which makes it all the more surprising when she turns rogue and becomes a drug kingpin known as "Mama Weed". Think
Breaking Bad meets
The Godfather.
Patience misuses her inside information to deal with "Scotch" and "Cocoa Puff", who are two inept dealers. She also rescues a dog named DNA from being put down by the K9 unit. Its specialty is as a drugs and currency detector which comes in very handy for her new career. All while dressed in her chic Hermes scarves which she wears as a hijab crossover. Very stylish. The film is set in Paris and I'm sure you'll recognise many of the local landmarks. For example, the Eiffel Tower of course, and the Avenue des Champs Elysees running up to the Arc de Triomphe.
The themes of this amusing story are money laundering, honesty, insider knowledge, feminism, and stereotypes. It is a fun comedy with some farcical moments and a preposterous and hilarious Chinese wedding (Patience lives in a Chinese building managed by the wonderfully deadpan Mrs Fo).
Alliance Francaise French Film Festival
So say
"oui, oui" to the annual Alliance Francaise French Film Festival, continuing Brisbane's love affair with all things French for the 32nd year. Coincidentally, Alliance Francaise is in 32 countries. The AF French Film Festival 2021 has a thrilling cinematic lineup that will immerse you in passionate storytelling, sophisticated humour, taut thrillers and films that highlight the rich cultural diversity of the French-speaking world.
Alas in 2020 the government introduced COVID-19 isolation measures the week the FFF opened in Brisbane. This is the largest foreign film festival in Australia. It is also The second-largest French Film Festival in the world, after Cannes. This year, there are 37 films from comedies, to dramas to escapism and animated films. You will laugh, cry and feel many other emotions as you watch some incredible movies whilst supporting the arts. Incredibly, there are nine world film premieres in 2021, including
Eiffel on opening night,
Aline, and
Skies of Lebanon.
