Will Shiva run toward the light or the dark?
The Girl From the Other Side: Siúil, a Rún Vol. 3
Nagabe

The Girl from the Other Side picks up in volume 3 with Shiva finding her Auntie wandering the woods alone at night. Shiva is delighted to see her Auntie again and immediately wants to introduce her to Teacher, but Auntie is frightened to be on the Outside and tells Shiva that they must move quickly to get back to the Inside.

Auntie grabs her hand and begins pulling her away, causing Shiva to panic. Can she really leave Teacher without saying thank you to him? And where has Auntie been all this time? And why has she suddenly reappeared?

Hearing Shiva's cries, Teacher steps out of the shadows and confronts them both. He is immediately suspicious of Auntie. Is she really Shiva's long lost Aunt? Why has she come back to reclaim the child that she abandoned on the Outside?

The Girl from the Other Side: Volume 3 focuses a lot on Shiva and her point of view. After she and Teacher are forced to bid a tearful farewell to each other, Shiva is taken to live with her Auntie in the Inside, which is a completely different world to the Outside. The Inside is a village that is blindingly white, there are no deep shadows like in the Outside, and everything has a lot of detail. Shiva wants to be happy to be back home with Auntie, but can't help but be suspicious about the circumstances. Why is Auntie's house a mess? And why are all her flowers dead?

Nagabe continues to weave an interesting, slow story in The Girl from the Other Side. One thing I've been wondering for a while is the Girl from the Other Side supposed to be a story about racism? The author continues to put on a strong emphasis on whiteness and blackness, the Insiders pray to a God of White, and the Outsiders are black and feared and treated as monstrous "Others" who must be avoided at all costs. Nagabe presents the reader with a lot to things to think about.

The Girl from the Other Side volume three had some great twists and some wonderful moments between Shiva and her Auntie and Shiva and Teacher. Shiva's story continues in volume four.
