A Ghost Story, An Adventure Story, A Love Story
The Mandurah Performing Arts Centre presents the world premiere of Sonya Hartnett's The Ghost's Child, adapted and directed by Helpmann Award winner Sally Richardson at the Fishtrap Theatre from 28 September to 5 October 2012.
Winner of the 2008 Australian Young Adult Book award The Ghost's Child is an enchanting fable of haunting resonance about the worth of life, the quality of happiness and the power of love.
The Ghost's Child is the story of Matilda Victoria Adelaide, a 75 year-old woman who once traveled the world with her father searching for the world's most beautiful thing. Matilda was an only child who longed for her life to be as mystifying and magical as a fairytale.
One day a strange young man appears unannounced in her lounge room. She offers him tea and biscuits and tells her story of falling in love with a wild boy named Feather and her attempt to build a 'respectable' life with him.
How does one craft sturdy happiness out of something as important, as complicated, as unrepeatable and as easily damaged as a life?" – Matilda, excerpt from The Ghost's Child.
According to Director Sally Richardson, "Sonya manages to get to the heart of the really big questions most of us grapple with at some point in our lives. The power of her writing is remarkable and it's no surprise she was the first Australian to win the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award."
Richardson has been independently creating and producing original Australian performances for over 25 years and is renowned for creating powerful works that go straight to the core of the Australian psyche.
For The Ghost's Child, Richardson has brought together a talented all West Australian cast consisting of former Sydney Dance Company dancer Kynan Hughes, Nicola Bartlett, Katya Shevtsov and Oliver Wenn.
The production features original music composed and performed live by Melanie Robinson. "I'm really excited to be premiering the work in partnership with Mandurah Performing Arts Centre. The landscape of the peel region closely reflects the world of Matilda's childhood, offering a genuine connection to the performance," said Richardson.
Set against the beautiful backdrop of the idyllic Mandurah waterfront, the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre is surrounded by an abundance of character, atmosphere and style, not to mention fantastic restaurants, making this the perfect opportunity to take a break from the city and experience this magical show.''
