The George Harcourt Inn

Built in 1980, The George Harcourt Inn at Gold Creek Road in Nicholls offers a good selection of pub-style food along with a few other dishes that you can expect to see at more upmarket settings. It is located opposite Cockington Green Gardens and is quite popular, with a crowd of a good size when we visited during lunchtime on a weekday.

Their Chicken Schnitzel included lemon pepper in the coating to give it a hint of a citrus flavour. The use of panko breadcrumbs rather than the standard kind also made it crispier than the “standard” type of schnitzel. The salad that we chose to accompany the schnitzel was dressed with a delectable tangy dressing and the chips were fried to golden brown and seasoned with the right amount of salt. For the sauce, we went with pepper sauce which had the degree of peppery flavour that we expected.

It may not look like it at first but there was enough grilled pork loin in the Pork and Apple Salad to make eating the dish a satisfying experience. The pork was not tough and had a good amount of charred flavour. Slices of apple partnered perfectly with the pork and the inclusion of walnuts added a bit of crunch to the dish. We chose to have the feta served separately so we could add as much as we wanted to the salad.

Their Chocolate Mud Cake had a rich chocolatey taste and the texture of the cake was not too dense. Enhancing the chocolate flavour was a drizzling of chocolate sauce and a strawberry provided an element of freshness. The mud cake is best enjoyed with the accompanying whipped cream to cut through its rich flavour.

Visitors that drop by on Tuesdays can enjoy a deal that offers Schnitzel or Guinness Pie for $20 or Chicken Parmi for $22 accompanied by a glass of beer, cider or soft drink. Its close location to Nicholls’ tourist attractions such as Cockington Green Gardens and The National Dinosaur Museum makes it a convenient dining option before or after you are done sightseeing.
