Summer tunes in Melbourne's make shift backyard
The sun is shining, I'm surrounded by friends, sharing a drink and a laugh whilst great music fills the air in what feels like the street of my youth...or that is what I imagine will be the experience when I visit The Garden Party, Southbank next month.
The previously unsused space behind the Melbourne Recital Centre will be transformed this summer from a dreary concrete expanse to green grassed, tree lined suburban streets reminiscent of the 80's when neighbours came together over a BBQ and a game of backyard cricket.
Beginning on January 25th the festival (which runs each weekend) will see punters sitting on recycled shipping pallets amongst kitch garden gnomes and other whimsical creatures, sipping on ale and enjoying the sounds of some of the finest musos from both home and overseas.
Each Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening until the festival's end on 17th February, there are tunes to suit all ears ranging from indie to pop, dance, soul, jazz and electro to name but a few and at just $35 (plus booking fee) you can catch three local and international superstars each night. A bargain for sure.
The event is easily accessed by public transport, or why not envoke your youth and ride your bike as there is plenty of bicycle parking out front on the Southbank Boulevard.
So if it's a party you're after, why not support local music and innovative use of Melbourne's forgotten spaces? Be sure to check out the Garden Party for details or log on to Moshtix and grab your tickets now because they won't last long.
