The most recent production of the
theatre.org.au Castle Hill Players is a farce set in the art deco mansion of an actor famous for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. The play begins with us participating as the audience of a Broadway play. Within five minutes the curtain closes, there is the sound of applause and the audience is left bemused and enthralled.
The cast of the Broadway play gather at the home of the lead actor William Gillete to celebrate Christmas 1936. The plot thickens with the appearance of a universally disliked critic and revelations about secret marriages and relationships. Double entendres and physical humour are plenty. The clever set design and beautiful costumes enhance the experience of the production. The complimentary refreshments at interval are well received as usual and there is a limited bar available on Friday & Saturday nights.
This play is an enjoyable romp that twists and turns like the door to the hidden room behind the Christmas tree. All of the actors throw themselves into their performances and the audience is taken along for the ride.
