High Steaks on the High Seas: Feast Like a Pirate at The Fourth Monkey
Just across the road from the buzzing West Village precinct in South Brisbane, you’ll find a quirky, tropical hideaway that feels more like a Caribbean daydream than a city bar. The Fourth Monkey Cocktail Bar & Grill brings pirate vibes, rum-fuelled cocktails, and a sizzling menu to life in an intimate space that celebrates flavour, fire, and fun. Whether you're a Brisbane local looking for a new favourite hangout, or a visitor after something memorable, The Fourth Monkey is ready to welcome you aboard.
Come Exploring with Me
My husband and I have visited twice. The first time we tried boneless fried chicken and it was delicious - crunchy on the outside and moist inside! The accompanying sauces were packed with flavour. We also bought some fries and beverages and everything was top-notch. The second visit we had a steak, salad, fries and a drink each, and it was the best meal we have had in years. The steak was cooked to perfection and the presentation of the food was great. We loved the atmosphere and my husband and I both enjoyed playing the complimentary arcade games.
Sound like your cup of rum too? You don't need a treasure map to get there...
Navigating to the Venue
You’ll find The Fourth Monkey at 58 Mollison Street, South Brisbane—easy sailing from some of the city’s best-loved areas. It’s just a short stroll from South Bank, the Brisbane Convention Centre, and the cultural hub of the QPAC and GOMA.
Public transport is straightforward, with nearby access to buses, trains, and ferries. The South Brisbane train station and Cultural Centre bus station are both within walking distance. There’s also on-street parking in the area, and larger parking lots nearby if you're driving.
All Hands on Deck! (Except on Mondays and Tuesdays)
Plan your Caribbean adventures for later in the week! The Fourth Monkey’s opening hours are:
Monday & Tuesday: Closed
Wednesday to Saturday: 3:00pm – Midnight
Sunday: 12:00pm – 10:00pm
The Menu: Bold, Smoky & Spiced
Food at The Fourth Monkey is far from ordinary. It leans into charred, smoky flavours with influences from the Caribbean, Africa, and classic grill house fare. The menu features share-style platters for those who want to feast with friends, as well as flavour-packed mains for solo diners.
You’ll find dry-aged steaks cooked over flame, tender spiced chicken, and creative side dishes like dirty rice and grilled vegetables. A few standout dishes include:
Flame-Grilled Chicken Breast marinated in aromatic spice blends
Charcuterie and Cheese Boards with cured meats, soft cheeses, and house-made accompaniments
Large Meat Platters piled high with steak, grilled chicken, pork belly, and sides
Prices range from around $15 for starters and snacks to $45 – $75 for larger mains and share platters.
Cocktails That Steal the Show
The drinks menu is one of the biggest drawcards here. Their cocktails are playful and theatrical, with tropical flavours, generous pours, and a serious nod to tiki-bar traditions. Expect rum-heavy concoctions, hand-crafted syrups, and eye-catching garnishes served in funky glassware—some even arrive flaming or smoking. There’s also a rotating range of craft beers, wines, and classic spirits if cocktails aren’t your thing, but honestly, it’s hard to resist the creativity on offer.
It’s a Vibe
The Fourth Monkey oozes character. Its décor draws from pirate lore and island aesthetics, with wood tones, dim lighting, and a sense of tropical mischief. Inside, the atmosphere is lively and welcoming, while the outdoor area offers a leafy, relaxed courtyard perfect for drinks with friends or weekend lunch in the sunshine.
It’s a venue that suits everything from low-key catch-ups and intimate date nights to full-blown celebrations. The music and lighting shift as the evening progresses, with a casual early dinner vibe transforming into more of a cocktail party feel by night.
Who’s Walking the Plank?
Families: While the focus is on adults, children are welcome during the day and early evening. The courtyard offers a casual setting for families, though the venue becomes more adult-oriented as the night goes on and the cocktails begin to flow.
Dog Lovers: The outdoor area is dog-friendly, making it a great stop for anyone exploring South Brisbane with their furry friend.
Groups & Celebrations: It’s a popular pick for birthdays, work functions, and party groups. They also cater to private bookings with options to reserve areas for events.
Our Verdict?
If you’re looking for somewhere with character, cocktails, and a bit of cheeky charm, The Fourth Monkey is a must-visit. It’s a place where the drinks are strong, the food is satisfying, and the vibe is always lively. Whether you're passing through Brisbane or planning a night out with friends, this pirate-themed paradise delivers a fun-filled, flavour-packed experience that’s anything but ordinary. My husband and I both enjoyed it and will definitely be back.
Word on the Street
Don’t just take my word for it. I read the reviews so you don’t have to! Other guests raved about the friendly staff, unique theme, and impressive cocktails. They say it’s the kind of place that feels like a discovery—even for Brisbane locals—and visitors often leave saying they’ll be back. Many diners mention the attention to detail in both food and presentation, and the overall experience feels special without being stuffy.
Now that's a fully stocked bar!
