Marking their 30th Anniversary as a public art gallery, the Heide Museum of Modern Art presents the 'Forever Young' exhibition. It's an enormous retrospective that takes a look at some of the major works that have been displayed at Heide over time.& #8232 ;& #8232 ;

The exhibition operates chronologically, beginning in the Heide I building, where a selection of Australian modern art from the 1920s and 1930s is on display. There are early photographs by famous artists such as hester&gbv=2&oq=joy hester&aq=f&aqi=g5g-S5&aql=&gs_sm=e&gs_upl= Joy Hester and Tucker&oe=utf-8&rls=&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=cLcUT_-VFs6jiQeFxJVE&biw=1301&bih=560&sei=dLcUT5uhNY7KmQXXqfjfAw Albert Tucker and paintings by Melbourne Modernists, John Perceval, Danila Vassilieff and Sam Ayteo, Arthur and Mary Boyd.& #8232 ;& #8232 ;

Even if none of the names are immediately recognisable, by visiting the exhibition you'll soon learn all about significant movements in Australian Modern Art. You'll get to know the cast of characters through a series of intimate photos that capture their unguarded, personal moments. Then you'll see their painted portraits and also the works they produced.& #8232 ;& #8232 ;

The exhibition continues into the Heide III building, where big names from the 1940s start to appear. Sidney Nolan for example, with his Ned Kelly series and mythical pieces by Arthur Boyd .

Moving onto the 1950s, the part of the exhibition housed in Heide II, turns distinctly modern. There are strong, abstract shapes, bold lines and textured oil paintings and work by artists such as Fred Williams , Charles Blackman and Mirka Mora . Others, who were beginning to enjoy the synthetic colours, previously unavailable to them, have their pieces highlighted as well.& #8232 ;& #8232 ;

Finally, in the Contemporary Gallery, Heide shows examples of what has been created from the 1980s up until today. There are enormous pieces stretching from the floor to the ceiling, modern indigenous themes and concept art, as the art evolves from paintings into sculpture made with polymers and glass. Personally, I was captivated by the precise circles in Mutlu Cerkez's 'Untitled: 17 April 2003'. It's likely that you'll find a favourite as well.& #8232 ;& #8232 ;

At the Heide Gift shop, there is a book called 'The Heide Collection' which can be purchased and taken home for further reading. Leave yourself a good couple of hours to view the approximate 230 works on display in 'Forever Young', or even longer if you thinking of combining your visit with a wander around the Heide Sculpture Gardens or with a meal at the fashionable Cafe Vue .
