is a grand old building near the corner of St George's Road and Pigdon Street in North Fitzroy. The first thing you'll notice about it is its thin, freestanding shape and its high, windowed turret above the second floor. Built in the late eighteen hundreds, the building is beautifully decorated with columns, arches and gables.

Inside, the Fitzroy Pinnacle has the cosy, lounge room feel down pat. It's decked out with red velvet curtains, a well-worn pool table and wooden dining table with cushioned chairs. The pub can seat around fifty in the front bar, reclining on low, sunken, lounges or propped up on bar stools. The best seats are on the raised platform, where a good bit of sunlight streams into the bar through arched windows.

Upon entry, you might be daunted by the seating situation as the front room often looks full, although once you realise that there's a separate dining room, beer garden, a couple of outdoor tables and nine odd stools around the bar as well, you'll soon find a spot among the crowd of fresh-faced uni students and seasoned, old, Fitzroy locals.

At the bar, happy bar staff; never snobbish, will serve you Growl Er, Guinness, Little Creatures, Carlton Draft, Mountain Goat Beer, and Gypsy Cider on tap. Without being boastful about their variety of imported drinks, they'll also find you a Stella Artois, Coopers, Mercury, Bulmers, or a variety of pilsners too if you ask. The wine list has around twenty-five drops to choose from including local offerings from Heathcote and the Yarra Valley.

Meal prices are from $8 - $23 dollars; order at the bar. The menu begins with a list of snacks like chips, potato wedges and nuggets, but before you think of it all as some horrible, fattening fry-up, you'll notice options like chickpea battered mussels or grilled saganaki as well.

A popular choice in the main meals are any of the $15 burgers available with marinated chicken breast, beer-battered flathead or falafel. Although on my next visit, I'll be opting for the home-made gnocchi with roast tomato, olives, pesto, parmesan. Parmigiana and porterhouse are menu staples too and they're generally served in portions so large, there's more than one person can eat on their own.

As for entertainment, hosts a steady rotation of live music. There's a Bit o' blugrass, a bit o' soul, and live jazz in the beer garden from 4pm on Sundays. To find out who's playing, you can check the website for details or call on 9489 3044.
