The Fitz is a gem of a cafe located on Brunswick St. It's one of those places that I don't remember my first visit to, like I can't imagine my life anymore without it being a part of it. Every trip to Melbourne I demand to visit and I don't even need to look at the menu - I always go straight for the 'Honey Chicken Risotto'. My God, is this risotto good. The balance of flavours is just right with sumptuous pesto marinated chicken and honey roasted pumpkin, crunchy sugar snap peas, melt in your mouth cherry tomatoes and a generous dollop of chilli jam and shavings of parmesan on top.
The wait staff are lovely and on my most recent visit last Friday the waiter thought that I sounded like I was from New Zealand, which is a bit interesting and something I've never heard before. I had to confess, I'm just from good old Radelaide. They also don't write your order down (not that I've noticed anyway) - they just listen to you and pop to the counter to order for you. The atmosphere of the place is warm and inviting, there's even a fireplace! And I've never felt under or overdressed there regardless of whether I was doing my best impression of a homeless person that day, or trying to pretend respectability in some snappy outfit.
My dining partner on this occasion went for the 'Chicken Burger' and devoured it like a T-Rex devours any living creature in its path. It came on delicious turkish bread and with an enormous side of crunchy chip goodness.
We both left The Fitz feeling well-fed and ready to go out and try to purchase some street cred from the many shops along the strip.
