You don't expect the Fish & Burger Co. to be so hip. It's a little taste of the city cafs right here in Doncaster. This is not just the local fish n chip shop. It's so much more.

We were lucky enough to meet Andrew, the owner. He has had years of experience in the trade. He lives local, was born and raised in Doncaster and sponsors a lot of the local clubs. Andrew has developed the menu, design and the upmarket fit out. The restaurant has been operating for three years successfully but it's now double the size. The new renovation is seamless and gives the intended aquatic feel. There's also outdoor seating.

Andrew has achieved his desire to accomplish a friendly local feel. His renovation was prompted by his belief that there was a gap in the market. He told us there's nothing like this around. He also believed (and I agree), that no one wants to travel into the city on a weeknight and they were so busy on the weekends they had to turn people away.

Andrew wanted to get the hip feeling in the 'burb of Doncaster. School kids and families… there's something for everyone at the Fish & Burger Co. It's all about the quality and that's obvious.

There's an extensive menu at the Fish & Burger Co. Andrew said that the men often buy the burgers and the wives, the healthy salads. There's a good kid's menu, gluten-free options and plenty more. Here's an overview of what they offer:

A variety of loaded fries. (I'm going to start working my way through the list). They start from $11.50. They have crispy chicken and a selection entitled rings and things, which includes onion rings, crispy handmade potato cakes $3, potato gems etc. They have five different salads (and not just the usual ones) and seven types of fish to choose from. If you want a bit of everything maybe try the ol' school pack, which includes flake, chips, potato cakes, dim sim, lemon and salad. They have large plates on their menu though personally, I think the one that I chose was large enough and great value. The kid's meals are $9.90, which includes chicken breast nuggets, bambino slider or fish and chips.

The Fish and Burger Co obviously have hamburgers… great ones. They have seven types of beef burgers. Please note they have Victorian grass-fed beef patties and use a signature blend of three prime cuts of beef. The burgers start from $12. If you're really, really hungry, you can order extra patties. They sell four types of chicken burgers starting from $13.50 and fish and veggie burgers are from $13.90. If you'd like to personalise your burger, there are 19 types of extras and 12 dipping sources.

Their drinks menu is not for the indecisive. They have organic drinks, shakes, wine, beer, ciders and soft drinks plus a large coffee menu. The coffee is a Brunswick blend, bold, sweet and beautifully structured with flavours of caramel, hazelnut and praline. If you'd like a hot chocolate, it's only $5 or an iced chocolate for $6.50 or you can order a simple cuppa tea.

Given the choices, it's quite incredible that we managed to make a selection in less than 10 minutes. My son chose the double chilli cheeseburger with two beef patties, cheddar, lettuce, pickles, onions, jalapenos, catch up, mayo, chili and cheese sauce! This was $16.90. He said this is the best, "I loved it". He said sometimes the meat can be overpowering or the bread can be overpowering but it was the right balance of meat, bread and sauces and it was so tasty.

My daughter chose the beef and chicken sliders for $13.50. "I think they were great, you get to taste the two different types of burgers. It was a great combo." she said. She liked the contrasting sauces and the fresh salads. She said it's the first time she's ever enjoyed a pickle! Her final comment was "I love this place and I want to come back".

I'm a real Atlantic salmon lover, so that's what I ordered for $24.90. I got not one but two perfectly cooked salmon fillets. They flaked away when I ate them but were slightly browned and crispy on the outside. This was served with crispy herb chips and were just as advertised – crispy and absolutely delicious. I also had a generous serve of leafy salad which looked simple but was very tasty. I wanted something a bit different and it's a combination of marinated capsicum, walnuts, rocket and cheese. This salad was an ideal accompaniment to the salmon.

Thank God we had enough room to try the sorbets and gelati. I never knew they were seasonal. Andrew proudly told us how he is working with the gelati maker to create dozens of delicious custom recipes. These also cater for those with allergies. The blood orange sorbet is made of fresh, ripe fruit. I have never tasted gelati quite like these. The mango sorbet tasted just like fresh pureed mangoes at the best time of year. Another popular buy is the after-dinner mint. At the risk of sounding very piggy, we also tried the white chocolate and berries gelato, which is my daughters' favourite and I got the Ferrero chocolate gelati with chunks of Ferrero chocolate. You can certainly tell the difference between cheap and high-end gelato. I've already picked the flavours I want to try next time we dine at the Fish and Burger Co.

We weren't the only customers who were glowing with praise. I spoke to several people and here's what they had to say:
"We come all the time. It's great, everything is great""I can't say anything bad. Their chips are really crispy. I mean really crispy.""It's baby friendly.""They have a really good variety and great service. They clean up quickly and always check on you."" We've been here before, maybe 50 times. Everything is consistently high quality and I love the environment.""It's my favourite burger place. Everything … I love it "

It's a sign of a great café when everyone around you is a regular. They have lots of regulars – when are you going to become one? . – well and truly worth travelling to.
