The First Frost is 32 episodes of Chinese drama based on the novel of the same title by the famous author, Zhu Yi. The first episode began with Sang Yan (played by Bai Jingting) and Wen Yifan (played by Zhang Ruonan) saying goodbye to each other under the rain. The scenes then jumped to 6 years later, when Wen Yifan works as a news reporter. Her new life is not the best. She lives in a small apartment unit that she shares with a family of three plus another man, under very minimal conditions. She often can’t sleep after long work hours as a news reporter, not only because her bedroom is next to a train track, but also because of trauma that happened to her when she was in high school.

Being abandoned by her own mother, molested by her own uncle, the scars of her past life run deep, and she can’t move on. She can’t even love herself or let other people love her. That was one reason she had to say goodbye to Sang Yan, her high school crush, 6 years ago.

Fate brings them to see each other again when Wen Yifan bumps into Sang Yan, the owner of the newest bar in town, which is also Wen Yifan's and her childhood friend, Zhong Siqiao's, new hangout. Wen Yifan and Sang Yan are “forced” to share an apartment after Wen Yifan’s housemate tried to take advantage of her, and Sang Yan’s apartment caught fire and needed to be renovated. Living together, they need to adjust to each other, especially after their bitter goodbye 6 years ago. But living together also slowly opens up their past and the real reason why they had to say goodbye 6 years ago.

When Wen Yifan eventually feels at ease by Sang Yan’s side and becomes happy together, another unfortunate thing comes up in Wen Yifan’s life. The uncle who was trying to take advantage of her suddenly appeared in front of her and opened up her old scar. Feeling scared and in doubt of her future with Sang Yan, once again, Wen Yifan runs away.

Provoking storytelling, poetic visuals, emotional narratives and masterful character development made The First Frost popular. Exploration of sensitive issues such as workplace harassment and mental health contributed to its success as well. The First Frost ended with a powerful message about self-care and appreciating life: Treat yourself well, and the world will hold more love for you!
