New Zealand-born brothers and musicians, Tim and Neil Finn changed the musical and visual landscape of the Australian music industry in the 1970s when they bounded onto the scene with a flamboyant and never-before-seen visual approach to stage performance through their band Split Enz, and an undeniable talent for crafting melodic songs and stories that would last a lifetime.

Beyond the costumes (which tamed and disappeared as their careers developed), the supreme songwriting talents of Tim and Neil Finn came to the fore which saw them perform together in Split Enz, as solo artists and in Neil's post-Enz band, Crowded House.

Now the Finns Tribute Band celebrate the songs and stories of Tim and Neil Finn and will be bringing their show to the Redland Performing Arts Centre on 9 August 2024.

With an enviable song selection to draw upon, the show features hits like I See Red, Fraction Too Much Friction, Don't Dream It's Over and many more. I asked drummer Simon Marafioti about the band and the show and here's what he had to say.

I really like your approach to the show where you say there are "no costumes, no wigs, just incredible musicians playing timeless tunes." Is that the key to the heart of the Finn Brothers as singers and songwriters that the music is so rich that it speaks for itself?

Exactly right. Their catalogue of songs is timeless, and as musicians fortunate enough to play these songs, we are simply paying our respect to the songs and the songwriters. We aren't trying to be Tim or Neil Finn, or Split Enz or Crowded House. We are simply playing an amazing bunch of songs and enjoy the emotional journey they take you on as much as our audience does!

So many of Finn's songs are the soundtracks to a lot of people's lives. How do the crowd react to hearing the songs and the show?

With such positivity and gratitude, to be honest. Many songs become big sing-a-long with the crowd, and you can see the happiness and delight on their faces when one song ends and another begins. It says everything about these amazing songs and songwriters.

What have you learnt the most and how have you grown as a musician from interpreting the Finn's music and songs?

Tim and Neil Finn have very different writing styles from each other, yet when all the pieces come together, their differences complement each other. It really is the true relationship between two brothers. One thing I love about our show is we don't have a dedicated front person. We have 4 lead vocalists and every band member (6 in total) is playing such a significant part without overshadowing the next person. We are great mates off the stage and love playing music together, and that becomes quite evident in our live performances.

What Else?
The show starts at 7:30 pm. Tickets range from $29-$39 and are available here . The show runs for 2 hours 15 minutes, including a 20-minute interval. The RPAC is located at 2 -16 Middle Street, Cleveland.
