Nestled into an armchair on the verandah of The Fern, with the Sunday paper in hand and cool tunes in the background, I feel perfectly at home. I really dig the vibe here - it's unpretentious and relaxed in the best kind of way.
The corn fritter ($18.50) is topped with avocado salsa, goats cheese and pulled pork. Tasty and thin, the corn fritter has a lovely sweetness that complements the saltiness of the goats cheese very well. The avocado salsa is adds a lovely, creamy texture to the dish. I like that The Fern stands out from your average breakfast menu. The Mexican twist gives this particular dish an extra oomph factor.
I order the Hangover Cure 2, partially because I enjoy the wordplay. The $18 plate is overwhelmingly packed with miscellaneous lettuce. I'd probably prefer it if the dish were heavier on carbs, but this is largely because I'm a bit of a carboholic. Hidden underneath the mountain of salad are hash browns with a delicious green onion mayo. The smoked speck, bacon and poached eggs provide a good protein base for the dish. But to be honest I end up craving a chunk of bread to enjoy the eggs with.
I get a bit of food envy when I see some of the other plates at our neighbouring tables. I've also heard that the burgers here are spot on, so I think I'll come back at lunchtime when I next visit. On the downside, the coffee here is below average. I'll try the Bloody Mary instead next time, which with the Hangover Cure 2 order will only set you back $10.
