Jean Paul Gaultier at the NGV: very naughty but oh so gentil
The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier must close this Sunday 8 February. In the final week, the exhibition will be open until midnight on Saturday 7 February and 10pm on Sunday 8 February with a series of after-hours experiences and performances before the exhibition departs for Paris. There are also pop-up talks during the final weekend, a Student Night and a limited number of tickets still available to the final Friday Night at Jean Paul Gaultier.
Enough of the publicity blurb. This is your last chance people. Call your state the Fashion Capital of Australia? Then get your haute couture behinds along to the NGV before this extravaganza blockbusts its boiler.
Jean Paul Gaultier is quite simply one of the most inspired and creative creatures the human race has ever produced. Who but JPG would think to portray a gorgeous landlocked mermaid with crutches as her sole accessory?
To witness his oeuvre (I promise I will only ever use this word once in my lifetime - and after all the man is French) is to be privy to the workings of a mind like no other. Outrageous. Confronting. But above all human. And even more astounding - self-deprecating! Oui! JPG has a wicked sense of humour that shines through in every piece on display at the NGV.
The exhibition is a triumph of CGI meets bird of paradise: a veritable David Attenborough documentary in 3D technicolour.Weekend Notes defies you to come away from this spectacle unmoved and unimpressed. Ce n'est pas possible!
