The National Gallery of Victoria's (NGV) unleashed The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk to the Australian public on 17 October amidst a huge media frenzy, as arguably the most famed modern day French Couturier of our time graced Melbourne for the opening weekend.

Initiated, developed, produced and circulated by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) under the direction of Nathalie Bondil, the MMFA's Director and Chief Curator, The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk first opened in Montreal three years ago and has since travelled the world.

Gaultier's influences have inspired some of his most ground-breaking and poignant moments in fashion such as the iconic cone bras and corsets designed for Madonna's 1990 Blond Ambition world tour, stripes and sailor inspired fashion trends as well as punk and tartan moved from the streets of London onto the world's high fashion catwalks

The exhibition introduces seven thematic sections tracing the influences, passions and obsessions of Jean Paul Gaultier: The Odyssey, The Boudoir, Punk Cancan, Skin Deep, Metropolis, Urban Jungle and Muses.

Entering the first room of the exquisite collection, visitors are exposed to a major feature of the exhibition; 32 animated talking mannequins which appear alive as their real life celebrity muses, using high-definition audio-visual projections. Gaultier's animated face talks from a stationary mannequin, alongside Ève Salvail and Smashing Pumpkins/Hole bass player Melissa Auf der Maur. Many of the mannequins can be seen wearing beautiful wigs and headdresses created by renowned hairstylist Odile Gilbert and her Atelier 68 team.

Other highlights of the exhibition include Gaultier's never-before-seen first dress created in 1971, as well as his early 1976 prêt-à-porter collection, to some of his recent haute couture pieces.

There is also the opportunity to see Gaultier's ready-to-wear collections, as well as pieces created for big-name Australian celebrities such as Kylie Minogue, Nicole Kidman, Andreja Pejić and Gemma Ward.

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk also proves to be much more than a fashion exhibition, with Gaultier's collaborations with renowned contemporary artists and photographers such as Andy Warhol, Peter Lindbergh, Richard Avedon, David LaChapelle, Pierre et Gilles, Herb Ritts, Cindy Sherman, Stéphane Sednaoui and Mario Testino among others, also explored throughout the exhibition.
