Located at the far end of town on North Terrace almost towards West Terrace, is a great little coffee spot you may want to discover. is owned and operated by Scott and his sister Lauren who have worked hard to establish a clientele in this neighbourhood.



The café mainly caters to lunch seekers who work nearby or those who are wanting a quiet coffee if they are in the area. The building is nestled between large new buildings belonging to the Uni SA City West campus. Some students also come to the cafe to have a break from campus bustle.The café is only opened on weekdays from 8 am to 4pm.

This fine heritage stone building was built in the early days of Adelaide by an industrialist, which means he must have had some sort of city enterprise such as a factory and needed a sturdy home close to work. The café uses the lower ground rooms only.





Scott told me his team are able to provide fast and efficient service over busy lunch times. The food on offer is lunchtime favourites such as rolls and foccacia, salads, and hot soup. Every day there is something different on the menu. There is always a vegetarian and gluten free options available. Small cakes and cookies are on sale to have with your coffee. The Coffee Barun at Prospect roasts the Espresso Room's own unique house blend. There is a wide selection of teas and herbal infusions available served in brightly coloured teapots.



The seating area is a room beside the serving area with a smaller private room at the rear. This private room can be used for meetings or small groups from 10-15 people. There is no charge to use the room if you purchase food and drinks from the café. The chairs are very comfortable and well padded. You can also sit outside on North Terrace under the umbrellas and watch the city skyline change before your eyes.



A unique feature at this establishment is a designated smoking area outside at the rear of the building. It is covered by a verandah and protected by westerly winds with PVC clear blinds. This is only a smoking area and in accordance with State law, no food or drink can be taken out here nor will be served in this area. There must be many people who would like to be able to sit outside with a smoke and read the paper after enjoying their coffee indoors, however I feel this space would be far more appealing to all customers. I would rather sit out here on a sunny day, than out on the street.



The building is located right opposite the Nurses and Medical Training School which is at time of writing was under construction. And next to this is the as yet not completed Adelaide Hospital. Further along is the medical research building and the Convention Centre. The owners are anticipating the opening of the hospital as this will make the west end a hub of activity. If you are in the area or can take a short tram ride, do pop in to the Expresso Room and give it a try.



I did not eat any of the food at this café, so cannot provide a review on this. However I feel with some more upmarket café menu choices business to attract the type of lunch patrons who have time to linger longer. I feel it needs to go a little more upmarket rather than the take away sandwich bar feel it has now. There are plenty of those in the city and possibly the uni campus. This is a fine character building and the current style and bill of fare does not seem to fit the surroundings. But after all it is an Espresso Room rather than a cafe, and for those who are in search of another great coffee venue you have found one here.
