Robert McCall is your regular guy working at Home Mart and he leads a quiet life. He lives alone, eats alone, and reads a lot. One evening at his local diner he meets Teri, a young lady who obviously walks on the wrong side of the tracks and does what she has to, to survive. Drawn to Robert by his calm demeanour, she befriends him and he in turn encourages her to believe in herself.
This unlikely friendship is disrupted one evening when Teri's boss, a Russian gangster forcefully grabs Teri from Robert's side while they are walking, smacks her about and throws her into his car. The next time Robert sees her again, Teri is bruised and battered and in a serious condition in hospital.
This awakens his protective instincts and he finds himself embroiled in something much larger than dealing with Russian pimps. When he takes them out, it seems he took out the east coast half of the Russian mafia. The big guns are drawn by the Russians and they send out the best of their best to deal with Robert.
This is an action packed film, yet it is filled with the complexities of hidden pain, the feeling of hopelessness and the consequences one has to live with when deciding to resurrect what one has left behind. There is also a swag of great acting from Denzel, Marton and ChloŽ. Denzel Washington's acting just gets better with age. He is very believable in the skin of the character he plays. Another actor worth mentioning is Marton Csokas who plays the Russian gangster sent to shut Robert down. I've seen a few of his other movies and he always puts in a solid performance.
As for young ChloŽ Grace Moretz who plays Teri, her star seems to be on the rise and is the one to watch. This movie comes out almost back to back with her other movie 'If I Stay' (which I've also seen) and is still playing on our shores at the cinemas. Remember her from her 'Kick Arse 2' and 'Carrie' ? I just felt this movie was a tad above being just a run of the mill action movie and had a bit of emotional depth to it. For me, Denzel Washington is always good value. You can either enjoy the ride because this movie does give you your money's worth, or you can pick it to bits and call it just another action film. For me, it moved at a great pace and it kept me thoroughly engaged. I give it a 7 out of 10.
