A celebration of Academy Award-winning songs is set to hit the right note for Limelight Theatre's last season of the year. Devised and directed by Gillian Binks, The Envelope Please pays homage to the best original song category first introduced to the Oscars in 1934.

While the movies weren't always winners, songs that came from them proved to be and many have gone on to become classics. The Envelope Please presents some of the best from the past 84 years through song and dance, including Over the Rainbow, White Christmas, The Way We Were, Fame, Arthur's Theme, Up Where We Belong, What A Feeling, (I've Had) The Time of My Life, Beauty and the Beast, My Heart Will Go On and Let It Go, among others.

Gillian described the show as a colourful, musical tribute. "I was keen to do a true theatre Christmas show, which gave opportunities to inexperienced and young performers alongside the more seasoned players," she said. "But it is challenging getting more than 30 people together all at the same time."

First performing in Godspell in 1986, Gillian has gone on to direct and choreograph shows for Limelight, Playlovers and Yellow Glass Theatres and the Goldfields Repertory Club over the years. She directed The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas in 1998 and choreographed Cabaret in 2000, both winners of best musical at the annual Finley Awards.

"The Envelope Please is the result of me wanting to do something fun and colourful in honour of my dear friend Terry McAuley, a Playlovers stalwart who we lost this year," Gilllian said.

Vanessa Vance, left, is singing High Hopes with her daughter Laura Stephenson in The Envelope Please.

Vanessa Vance and her 12-year-old daughter Laura Stephenson are both performing in the show. "I'm performing with her on the duet High Hopes and am hoping to embody Frank Sinatra in the best way possible," she said.

"My first solo is the song Evergreen from the 1976 version of A Star is Born with Barbra Streisand, a song she co-wrote – no one can be Babs, so I'm definitely going to be singing it my way. It's interesting doing this song when there is currently a remake of the same movie out in cinemas now."

In contrast, Vance is also singing the 1970s Donna Summer disco tune Last Dance. "It's from a very forgettable movie that no one is likely to remake, ever," she said. "But the song is awesome and it's a chance to have fun with disco, which is a genre I love.

"I'm thoroughly looking forward to embracing the 70s vibe from Streisand and Summer, two top divas full of heart and soul. The rest of the show has me supporting some other great vocalists singing songs from the 80s and then joining the whole cast ensemble as we showcase some of the Disney favourites."

Mother and daughter Vanessa Vance and Laura Stephenson… ready to entertain you.

Vanessa said she was actively choosing not to listen to the original soundtracks so she could find her own sound with the music to avoid comparing herself. "Singing two songs sung by queens of the industry is an honour and a challenge," she said.

"I'm taking the music for what it is and making it my own as best I can and hope the audience enjoys the experience and sings along. The Envelope Please is an opportunity to do particular songs on stage – and in costume – that I normally wouldn't get a chance to sing. There is such variety in this show and I get to have some fun with my daughter."
