The Dudgeon is Coming is written and illustrated by Lynley Dodd, author of the popular Hairy Maclary series of children's picture books. The story is like a game of Chinese Whispers. The taffeta cat mishears the news about the Dudgeon's impeding arrival. She passes on what she thinks she heard to the hopalong snoot, who in turn passes on an even more distorted version of the message. This goes on until all the characters in the book are very worried about the coming of the shy, polite little Dudgeon, who they expect to be a terrifying monster.

This story is perfect for reading aloud. The animals' strange names are fun to say and the rhymes help children to anticipate what is coming next and start to read along. The whimsical illustrations full of crazy animals like a pig with a pineapple for a body (or should that be a pineapple with the head of a pig?), an owl in a Regency wig and a sort of rat creature with orange stripes and a ten gallon hat, are sure to delight adults and children alike.

Recommended for children aged 2 and up.
