Scott Caan is not known as a director ordinarily, he is an actor; this does not always mean that a movie will be deficient, but in this case it does. I have a tolerance for most films, even soppy rom-coms, but this movie was for a lack of a better word, boring.

The film follows a depressed, thirty something year old failed writer named Solo, whose only friend, Casper, is a womanising sex addict, who brings home chicks to take nude photos of. Solo, unable to overcome his slump, buys a dog, as advised by his psychologist. Initially he's irritated by the dog, but gradually grows to love it. Then for unknown reasons, a bunch of people decide they want the dog, and so a series of unlikely and somewhat tedious events unfold to create what should have been a quirky, delightful comedy.

It wasn't.

It always frustrates me when I see an excellent cast in a movie, only to deliver terrible writing and script.

Okay, first the "good" points will be discussed. The soundtrack was pretty good, fitting choice of songs, not too cheesy. Sound design was adequate, but you could tell it was a low budget film, so sound wasn't really a priority. Acting was well executed, decently established characters.

Now the flaws in this movie. Camera work you could tell was on-the-fly, often hand held, but unfortunately frequently clumsy and shots sometimes were long-winded. The story itself was too light hearted. It would take you places but never really climax or build into anything. There were "bad" guys but they never felt threatening; there was a love interest that never eventuated; there were situations that were quickly rectified; the dog itself didn't have a lot of character either. The script was passable, but just not funny enough with mostly dreary dialogue.

I was expecting so much more from this film. I remember watching the trailer a while ago thinking that it would be hilarious. I regret to say it was instead a monotonous, uneventful mess. I feel terrible by being so critical of this film but at least I never got to the point of wanting to turn it off. I'd give it a 4.5 out of 10.
