MindFlix Inc is proudly presenting a free screening of the British television documentary 'The Doctor Who Hears Voices' at Bruce Hunt Lecture Theatre, Royal Perth Hospital on Tuesday 7 April 2015.MindFlix Inc is a not for profit community group which regularly hosts screening events around WA. MindFlix showcases feature films and documentaries which accurately portray mental health issues and following each screening event, a detailed discussion led by a number of mental health specialists is held.
The upcoming event will feature a screening of 'The Doctor Who Hears Voices', directed by Leo Regan.Acclaimed actress Ruth Wilson portrays Dr Ruth, a junior doctor, who begins to hear a voice telling her to kill herself and others.Dr Ruth turns to Rufus May , who had himself been diagnosed as schizophrenic as a teenager. Rufus May is now a clinical psychologist in the NHS and he talks her, walks her and even swims her through it, using his own experience instead of medication.The critically acclaimed television documentary details the radical therapy which May provided to the junior doctor and was a finalist at the Mind Mental Health Media Awards in 2008.Following the screening of 'The Doctor Who Hears Voices', a post-screening audience discussion will be led by Leela James, Lyn Mahboub and David Rivett.Leela James is Consumer Engagement Officer with CoMHWA (Consumers of Mental Health WA) and holds a Master of Human Rights (Curtin University).Lyn Mahboub is Recovery Advisor and Manager of Hearing Voices Network Australia with Richmond Fellowship WA, chair of CoMHWA (Consumers of Mental Health WA), lectures in Mental Health Recovery in the Faculty of Health Sciences School of Occupational Therapy and Social Work at Curtin University, and holds a Bachelors of Arts (Hons) in Psychology/Communication & Cultural Studies (Curtin University).David Rivett has been with Richmond Fellowship WA. initially as a Staff Trainer in Recovery Work since 2007, Hearing Voices Group Facilitator since 2010, and Relief Recovery Worker since 2011. David holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Bachelor of Psychology (Curtin University 2001), a Graduate Diploma in Counselling (Notre Dame, Fremantle).Please note the screening will commence at the earlier time of 6pm at Bruce Hunt Lecture Theatre this month.
