While not strictly "the weekend," Thursday night is the start of unwind-time for many uni students. As many of them can tell you, it's a fine art, learning how to balance a budget with a will to party.

Thursday nights at The Dan O'Connell Hotel Irish Pub in Carlton is a budget-friendly option for uni students and cheapskates alike, offering $1 tacos and $6 pints.

Minimum purchase for tacos is $3, but who couldn't down 3 tacos? After the first 3, subsequent tacos are a dollar a piece. All tacos come with lettuce, cheese, salsa and bean mix. For a dollar or two extra you can "pimp your taco" with a side serve of sour cream, guacamole, jalapenos or extra salsa. And all this can be washed down with a pint (or five) for just $6. While they're not the deluxe tacos you might get at a Mexican restaurant, for a dollar they're pretty good.

It does get quite busy, but the Dan aren't short of table space. As long as you're okay with yelling to your friends as the night wears on (pretty normal for a pub anyway), then $1 taco Thursdays will be a good way for you to spend (or at least start) the opening night of the uni weekend.
