The Cupboard Under The Stage, Empire Revival

It is a favourite haunt so I return here on a frequent basis and my latest visit introduced me to the Cupboard Under the Stage. More about this further down. For those of you who might not be so well acquainted with the Empire Revival Antique Market, this is a unique place in Paddington which used to be an old theatre. With the advent of the television, however, the theatre fell into disuse but mercifully it was saved from being demolished. It now stands proud, complete with paintwork that is peeling with that unmistakable cobalt blue on the walls which I love.
The Cupboard Under the Stage is the latest little addition to this wonderful place so it is worth seeking it out next time you visit. It is a little room tucked under the stage crammed full of second-hand popular books and some special editions too.
It's a lovely inviting space and one where you can browse the titles and decide what is going on your reading list. The prices are attractive too. The best bit of course is actually walking through the whole market and catching the unusual bargains which you come across. I mean who can say no to a pair of lobster thongs!
I love the faded glory, the elaborate Chandeliers looking for a forever home, the delicate glasswork and jewellery. Even the priceless netsuke adorn the cabinet to the left as you enter. There is so much to admire. You may not want to take it all home, but the Cupboard under the Stage offers those irresistible bargains that you will want to make your own.
