The inviting sign " The Cultured Cafe " and warm blue exterior was so charming on Darling Street in Balmain that I was curious to try it out. The menu was very enticing, offering all day breakfast and lunch options.

I have of course heard of probiotic food but never an entire cafe dedicated to cultured foods. Many people today are aware that cultured 'probiotic' food is excellent for gut health and maintaining a healthy body. The thought of an entire restaurant dedicated to probiotic foods had me intrigued.

Upon entering the restaurant, I promptly fell in love with the décor. It was so fresh and inviting, truly a unique take on cafe ambiance. There was ample dining space and a sunny patio both outside and upstairs.

My dining companion and I decided to start with the bread and cultured dips. The breads were heavenly, homemade on the premise; a charcoal sourdough and sprouted buckwheat and quinoa sourdough.

Accompanying the breads were delicious dips; avo cacao butter, sprouted hummus and black garlic vinaigrette. The avo cacao butter was my favourite, wicked buttery goodness that is healthy.

The menu was very balanced offering both meat and vegetarian and vegan dishes.

Although I am a meat eater, the vegan burger really appealed to me. I was not disappointed, it had a phenomenal taste, rich and satisfying unlike any other veggie burger I have tried. The patty was a sprouted chick pea, quinoa and miso patty and it really hit the spot.

My friend had the miso soup which she raved about as well. The miso soup was a harmonious blend of mushrooms, leeks, sprouted soya beans and eggs. Such a healing and healthy blend of satisfying and nurturing food.

I also couldn't resist sampling the bacon and egg roll with homemade coconut bacon (nitrate free) eggs, provolone cheeseand cultured tomato sauce. The bacon was so good, it was an excellent bacon and egg roll - yum.

The restaurant also offers a full range of drinks from fermented kefir beverages, excellent coffees to freshly squeezed juices.

I spoke with the founder and head chef Connor Min of about where the concept of a probiotic cafe came from. He shared with me that he was diagnosed with diabetes after working for ten years as a chef in the culinary world. Devastated by this diagnosis Connor made the decision to change his lifestyle by radically changing his diet.

He researched and discovered the health effects of fermented and probiotic foods. He began including sprouted seeds, fermented vegetables and low carb foods. Connor proudly told me he has lost 17 kilos and is coping well with diabetes.

Connor has a true passion for cooking and healthy cultured foods. All of the fermented probiotic foods are made in house. I was very impressed by the cafe, the quality of the food and the ambiance.

is a place I will be returning to and soon to get my cultured fix. Try it out for yourself - you won't be disappointed. Mention this article to receive a 5% discount.
