Need some more yodelling in your life? Failing to fulfil your quota of Bratwurst sausages and lusty maidens dressed in dirndls? Well, you're in luck, meine Damen und Herren (ladies and gentlemen). , located in Victoria's Dandenong Ranges, has more Bavarian culture than you can poke a pretzel at.

But first off, you'll need to get here. The Cuckoo is located in Olinda, VIC/Cuckoo Restaurant, 508 Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd, Olinda VIC 3788/@-37.8436687,145.0290231,11z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m13!4m12!1m5!1m1!1s0x6ad646b5d2ba4df7:0x4045675218ccd90!2m2!1d144.96328!2d-37.814107!1m5!1m1!1s0x6ad6245281a4fd2d:0x3d2b0eb656f0eb66!2m2!1d145.369525!2d-37.858205 an hour's drive from Melbourne . Luckily, once you get past the urban sprawl, the drive is utterly salubrious with views to make you go "ooooo".

The Cuckoo is done up like a traditional Bavarian tavern, and you'll be bug-eyed gawking at what must be Australia's best collection of cuckoo clocks, all quirkily arranged for maximum kitsch factor.

The Cuckoo is like a permanent Oktoberfest set-up, with the staff dressed up in traditional Bavarian garb, a deer's head poking out of the wall as if to say "hallo!", red checked tablecloths, and beer steins aplenty.

Lunch, dinner and afternoon tea are smorgasbord-style, with a wide range of European foods, traditional German fare, meats and seafood, vegetarian dishes, a huge range of desserts, and a pancake bar.

But it's when you hear the cowbells ringing that you really know you've found the right dinner venue. Every day, the good folk at the Cuckoo perform a live floor show with bells, yodelling, a woodchopping slap dance and piano accordions. If you visit in July, you can also expect a visit from Santa. Or, should we say krampus ?

The views from the window are just as good as the views of your nearest lederhosen -clad lad. Olinda is a magically beautiful township full of trees and forests, and the Cuckoo is gorgeously nestled amongst them. Looking out the window, you could almost be Hansel and Gretel lost in the Black Forest…

…not that you'd want to be, of course. Not when you can be somewhere as enchanted as the Dandenongs. (Then there's the whole "being imprisoned by a witch" thing, I s'pose.) The Cuckoo makes for a crazy fun, and tasty, day trip - so go with an open mind and an empty tum tum.
