Melburnians love to run. One of the first things I noticed when I first moved here, was how densely populated the running track around the botanical gardens was during the evening, and stranger still, at sun rise. Right before dawn, any number of runners will be found at the foot of Alexandria Avenue ready to start the day with running hell for leather up a hill.
Following the trend and keen to get fit, I started running myself. Recently, a friend recommended Melbourne based running group, the Crosbie Crew, as a way to improve my fitness through their free training program. So naturally, I went along to investigate.
At 6.15 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday, the group meet at the pillars on the tan for a group training session. The runners are a community united by a common goal – to run a distance and achieve a personal best.
Runners of all abilities get involved. As we began the session, a synchronised beep of watches informed me that some of these people were serious about achieving their running goals. But you don't have to have a fancy watch to join in. All you need is a pair of sneakers, a bottle of water and a 'can do' frame of mind.
After just a few sessions, I felt myself getting fitter and I've really felt motivated by the group's encouragement to one another. Just when you don't think you can stomach another lap, a fellow runner hurdling by will give you the encouragement you need and you will give it everything you've got!
Each year the Crew are heavily involved as Run Leaders for the official Run Melbourne and Bank of Melbourne Marathon training series. Developing and motivating runners for these events has seen many people achieve their running goals and go on to develop a passion for the sport.
