Sitting in the garden

Drinking Grandmas's Tea

The crickets are a chirping

The currawong sits in the tree

A nibble and a tipple

It's now after three

Time for a sing along

In the Cottage with me

On entering you could be forgiven for thinking you have stepped back in time to the old days at Grandma's cottage when her daily ritual was sweeping the yard and washing the stoop with a pale of water and the kettle was always just boiled for a pot of tea. So much love and care has been put into making The Cottage Bar and Kitchen a unique place to go. It is located at 342 Darling Street, Balmain in a glorious old Victorian Terrace house. Special details begin right at the front entrance as you walk through the alfresco garden where you can relax either with just a drink or partake in some delicious share plate treats as well.

There are so many areas to sit depending on your mood or number of guests. Whether it be out in the front garden overlooking Darling Street watching pedestrians idle casually past or on the colourful tiled front porch perched against a filigree iron railing.

But there is more! You enter to find a myriad of areas to sit and enjoy a drink or the whole deal.

The venue decor has been transformed by renowned Designers Luchetti Krelle. The lower level has a lovely bar area with rustic hunters lodge elements of timber benches and flooring, vintage coat hanger hooks line the walls displaying a variety of artefacts from old kitchen scales, billycans to farmer's axes. Country comfort kitchen tables and walls painted in hues of vintage amber to cedar greens add to the venue's cottage theme.

Plenty of seating options for groups or couples with more quaint table settings throughout.

The open kitchen servery with upside down hanging tea cup lighting add further to the cottage like charm.

But there is more! The main focal point of the lower level is their new wood fired pizza oven.

Don't let this fool you into thinking that all they offer is pizza. The Cottage menu created by Head Chef Ellen Young is varied and focuses on shared plates of delicious items. A simplicity of flavours from dishes such as arancini balls, salmon carpaccio and freshly shucked oysters are offered to tease your taste buds.

Not forgetting the drink menu, which is quite extensive. If you are a wine lover or consider yourself a craft beer connoisseur, you won't be disappointed with the selection.

There are even more areas to sit and depending on the occasion if you have a group, you might like the inner courtyard.

If downstairs doesn't take your fancy, you can wander upstairs to more gorgeous spaces to relax or dine in. This area is generally booked and is ideal for functions, so keep that in mind when deciding to visit. The upper level exudes the country cottage like charm of a bygone era with comfy armchairs in velvet and vintage floral print upholstery, bursting with exuberant floral designs. Along with the green ferns hanging from the ceiling you will definitely feel a sense of languid bliss settle over you, as you down a few drinks making it hard to leave.

Being a lovely summer evening and after seeing this wonderful venue we decided we really must stay and enjoy a few drinks in the front garden.

But after watching some mouth watering dishes wander past us, we thought let's go for glasses of Ponte Prosecco $10 each and a Smoked Mozzarella and Pancetta Pizza $23

The pizza had a perfect crispy thin crust and the pairing of flavours melted in my mouth with us expressing satisfying 'ahs' of appreciation. We didn't want to leave, so we stayed a couple of hours just enjoying the summer evening under the fairy lights and watching the venue fill with smartly dressed patrons. Owners Rob and Osman have created a winner here and we could easily see and understand why this has become a favourite venue for locals and visitors to Balmain. Put this one of your to do list now!
