This November, Holden Street Theatres and Red Phoenix Theatre are proudly presenting the Australian premiere of the biting satire The Conspirators by marvellous Czechoslovakian playwright, Václav Havel.Tickets are now on sale for this strictly limited season running from 2 to 11 November 2017.
The Conspirators serves up a delightful dessert of laugh out loud comedy and the occasional whipping. It's House of Cards meets Yes, Minister as the hapless government invents a conspiracy to justify military force, censorship, and torture to preserve its democratic ideals. In a fictional country, the corrupt dictator Olah has been overthrown and a shiny new democracy has been created. However, the Prime Minister's advisors are worried the PM is too weak to resist the dictator's return so they initiate a 'fake news' conspiracy theory about Olah planning a comeback. In a series of hysterical and head-shakingly absurd leadership flip-flops they lead the public to embrace a stronger military, increased censorship and torture as perfectly reasonable tools to protect freedoms, justice and their democracy.
Václav Havel became a key player in the Velvet Revolution which facilitated the demise of communism in Europe, led to the fall of the Berlin Wall, and ultimately resulted in him becoming the first democratically elected President of the Czech Republic. The Conspirators was the first play he wrote after his work was banned. The script was smuggled out of the country in a bathroom handover at the border and was performed for the first time in Germany.
In an age where terrifying leaders such Putin, Trump, Duterte and Kim Jong-un beat their chests and boldly threaten each other with fiery destruction, The Conspirators is an absolute must-see! It is sure to be a wonderfully funny night of anarchic humour! The Conspirators is directed by Michael Eustice and features a stellar cast of Adelaide actors including Anna Bampton, Adrian Barnes, Kyla Booth, Emily Branford, Tony Busch, Gabi Douglas, Brant Eustice, Nick Fagan, Ruby Faith, Hugo Fielke, Martha Lott, Steve Marvanek and Russell Slater.
