Yes, the owners explained to  us, the name certainly is a mouthful!

But that is not the only thing here that is complex. This hotel has to be one of the most interesting and thought provoking places I have ever been to, let alone spent the night in.



Yes, it is a place to peacefully lay your head and sleep. It is also a cafe, a church, an underground Sunday school for the children, an outdoor relaxation centre, an authentic old opal mine and most importantly a family run business.

Kezia met us with a smile and a welcoming hand shake and showed us proudly through her lovely establishment.

You can just tell sometimes the pride people have in their own personal history and what they are creating - both were clearly apparent here.

The family had just settled in for their own lunch when we arrived and they promptly jumped up and delighted in showing us all through the business and telling us the history of the place whilst their lunch was going cold.





As you enter their business you go down the sloping corridor so you really are going down underneath the ground as well as into the hillside -something which is quite unique here.

They have a variety of rooms available including family rooms, interconnecting rooms and singles and doubles.

One of the ones which I was quite taken with had a vein of opal running through the room. They had placed clear perspex over this section of the wall so that it can stay in place and be viewed by the guests who stay here.



They also have a unique underground cafe and you can enjoy a continental buffet breakfast in the dining room or afternoon coffee and cake in their soft rock cafe.

It was explained to us that as they were digging out a new section of the motel, part of the roof collapsed exposing an old mine. Most of the original diggings were still viewable and this has been turned into a feature part of the motel.

Ironically as is often the case in opal mining towns when they started to dig out the area next to the old mine, less than a couple of feet away, they struck opal.



What also is charming is that much of the decoration has been hand done by their grandmother.

The rooms are wonderfully cool and fresh.

If you wish to take home a souvenir, upstairs they also have an Opal shop.

Right next door you can visit the Revival Fellowships church and Sunday school. In the roof you can also see some opalised sea shells from millions of years ago, that have been left here for you to view.

$210 per night although if you contact them discounts are available.

The rate also includes
Access to all of the common areas in the building including pool table and a DVD library. Each room comes equipped with a television and DVD player.

It is built in an historical (1918) original opal mine and is the newest hotel in the Opal capital of the world on the mining fields of Coober Pedy.

Valerie, Dean, Deborah, Kezia and Ben welcome small and medium groups as well as individual travellers.
