Brisbane has been home for 8 years now - with the help of two energetic young girls it is a great place to discover.
The running season is upon us and the next few months will see thousands of people of various levels hitting the pavements and participating in a variety of fun runs. This year there is a new addition to the running calendar. It is totally unique for numerous reasons and guarantees there will be fun in the run. The Color Run promises "the craziest, most colourful 5km of your life".

The Color Run is a 5km run and is enjoyed by participants right across the globe. It has been labelled as the "happiest 5km on the planet". For this event you can leave your worries about speed and PB's at home. This run focuses on celebrating health, individuality and happiness. There are no winners, there are no timing chips. This run is purely about sharing a fun event with your family and friends and caters for all ages, demographics, shapes and sizes.

It is now Queensland's turn to join in the fun and the Gold Coast will host The Color Run for the very first time on April 14th. The nominated major charity beneficiary will be the Ponting Foundation. (Organisers are still searching for a suitable location in Brisbane so keep your eye on their website for a date to be advised.)

The unique race rules even sound fun and inviting. These rules include "all participants are welcome", "white shirt dress code" and "coloured Willy Wonka goodness at the finish". Everything about this run sounds appealing.

There are four stages to the run and as the runners proceed through each kilometre they are pelted with different colours. First comes yellow, then orange, blue and last of all pink. The end result is a sea of colourful craziness and thousands of very happy, bright runners. There is even a post-race party, lots of music, a festival of colour and the participants themselves get involved in throwing the colourful dust.

The rainbow dust is completely safe and should wash off easily. Just as a precaution sunglasses or goggles could be an accessory you may want to consider. It is probably also a good idea not to wear your best clothes or trainers.

This feel-good run began in January 2012 in the United States. Travis Snyder is the mastermind behind this extraordinary event. Himself a triathlete and avid runner, he developed this run in the hope of bringing together people in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. In 2012 over 50 events were held involving over 600,000 people. In 2013 the organisers hope to host over 100 events with over a million participants. For an event to grow so rapidly there must be some magic and truth to the hype.

Melbourne was the first to host a colour run in Australia. Last November 12,000 participants raised money for the Australian Paralympic Committee. Sydney's inaugural colour run was a sell out earlier this year, with 20,000 runners raising funds for Heartkids. Whilst the race promotes healthiness and happiness another large component is focusing on giving back to the community. For each city in which the event is held a local charity is nominated as the beneficiary. Most states across Australia have now hosted or will soon host this zany run.
Whether you are a professional or a novice, a child or an adult, whatever your shape, whatever your size, this run is open to one and all. It is hoped that by creating such a fun and positive atmosphere more people will be encouraged to participate. The intention is purely to create an event where everyone can share a happy, healthy experience.

Don't hesitate. Dig out those whites and prepare yourself for a blast of colour. This is sure to be your ultimate fun run.
