I am a world traveller & a mom of two, (8 & 6). I love to meet people, and am fascinated that there are 7 billion stories out there to be explored. I think Melbourne is the most happening city to live in with all the fun activities around town.

Are you looking for the perfect coat?
I had been looking for a very specific type of a coat for a few weeks, and my search was not leading me anywhere. Many boutiques and department stores have stocked up on winter or trench coats, but I hadn't found what I had in mind. I missed the "Burlington Coat Factory" that was always conveniently stocked with rows of coats when I lived in the US and was the answer to all coat problems.
But here in Melbourne, I had no more viable options to explore any further. I had started contemplating the idea of ordering a coat online after seeing one of my friends who was wearing a stunning coat when I met her and she told me she had bought it from Debennhams in UK. However, I would shop for clothes online only half-heartedly because a coat on a skinny tall model always looks brilliant, until you try it on yourself. And if you've ordered it online, sending it back for a refund costs a fortune in itself.
If you can relate to my story and are looking for that "perfect" coat, you will be delighted that you tumbled upon this article. After weeks of looking, I finally found the perfect place literally in my backyard. My husband luckily browsed to the website www.coatman.com.au and we then decided to visit the place. Finally, my prayers were answered!
The Coat Man outlet is located in Caulfield where they have a large warehouse with rows and rows of winter jackets / coats, rain coats and tench coats for men and women all under one roof. They also have a small range of jackets and coats for children. Along with coats, accessories such as scarves, mufflers, gloves, hats, umbrellas, etc are also conveniently stocked. The place was busy when we visited on a Thursday afternoon, with lots of phone and online orders to be filled as well. I was told that the coats are designed and made in Australia. Very few are imported.
The range of sizes, colours, styles is quite extensive. It would be good to know what you are looking for before you visit, otherwise, the variety of coats can be a bit overwhelming. The family business is run by Norah and Moshe Elkman who provide excellent customer service with free smiles.
I could not believe when, within minutes, I had managed to find not one but three coats that I really liked. I finally selected just one, leaving the rest for my future visits. It fitted perfectly, I had a choice of 5 different colours to pick from and the coat is very trendy. I even got a complimentary scarf with my purchase. I must say that I was one happy customer when I walked out of the shop.
If you decide to visit, here are some pointers:
1. Go online and see their designs first. Try to shortlist a few designs that you would like to try in person.
2. Call them before you go, as recommended by their website, to see if they are open.
3. Visit the outlet when you have nothing scheduled for at least a couple of hours, as you might find yourself checking out more than you had come in for and spending a fair bit of time. Parking is a bit tricky, however the place is conveniently located on a tram route.
4. Try the coats on yourself. I ended up buying a different size than I normally wear. Each style has its own code of sizing, so it's best to try the coat on. You might also find that something that appears beautiful might not suit on your body style or vice versa.
5. Although, I think the prices are very reasonable, keep your budget realistic. If you have done your homework right, you will agree with my statement about the prices being reasonable.
6. Talk to the owners: they are friendly and eager to help you out.
Share your experience if you visit and leave a comment. And if you like the place, tell your friends about it. Happy coat shopping.
I've had that happen to me before. I spent ages looking for a new winter coat, then one day I found two that were practically perfect and it took me just as long to choose which one to go for as it did to find them in the first place.
Hi Bryony: Thank you for sharing your experience. If budget allowed, I am sure you would have purchased both after finding them with such difficulty. Myer's has a great collection of coats as well, but I just couldn't find something that looked good on me till I went to the Coat Man.
I too found the Coatman website by accident. I had been looking for a smart straight coat in black for years. Most of the ones at Myer either made of synthetic fibre and the woollen ones are so iverpriced. At Coatman I found my style, colours and fabric at such a reasonable price. When my coat arrived I was really impressed with the detailed finish of the coat as well as the packing and a very personal note from the coat makers. This is a couple who have an eye for detail and service in every possible way. I have recommended them to all my friends even overseas.
