The City of Stonnington is giving summer the ultimate send-off with its popular FREE three-part concert series, The Classics.On selected Saturday evenings in February in Stonnington's parks and gardens, you and your family are invited to enjoy Opera, Broadway and Symphony favourites performed by some of Australia's most acclaimed artists, including Rob Mills, Bobby Fox, Clare Bowditch, Dimity Shepherd and Shakira Tsindos.City of Stonnington Mayor, Cr Steve Stefanopoulos congratulated the series' newly appointed artistic directors for bringing together an exciting range of talent from across the musical landscape."Thanks to the commitment and vision of The Classics' directors, the Stonnington community will be able to enjoy some fantastic music and performances," he said."I would like to encourage you all to get along to at least one of these performances, which will all take place outdoors in Stonnington's historic parks and gardens."Each event in the series will be dedicated to a different classic genre:[BREAK]
The Classics: Opera Puccini's Madama Butterfly Saturday 3 February, 7.30pmVictoria Gardens, High St, PrahranAward-winning Australian director, Cameron Menzies will bring Puccini's tragic love story, Madama Butterfly to the stage with an abridged version performed in the round with an accomplished principal cast and beautiful Japanese influenced costumes.You can look forward to performance by Helpmann Award nominated Dimity Shepherd as Suzuki and emerging operatic star Michael Petruccelli, renowned for his pure, glowing tenor. It will also feature Conductor Dr Kathleen McGuire with a live eleven-piece orchestra, and Mairi Nicolson as the host.[BREAK]
The Classics: Broadway Composers of the 21st Century featuring Rob Mills Saturday 10 February, 7.30pmArdrie Park, Ardrie Rd, Malvern EastThis will be a joyous celebration of some of the best new contemporary music, including songs from Hamilton, Jersey Boys, Wicked, and Beauty and the Beast to name just a few.Hosted by stage and screen star, Rob Mills this night will include performances by Bobby Fox; Lisa-Marie Parker; Simon Gleeson; Zahra Newman and emerging artist Imogen Spendlove.Resident Director, The Bodyguard The Musical, Christopher Parker will direct the performance, which will feature Musical direction by Daniel Puckey with an eight-piece band. The Classics: Symphony Special guest artist Clare Bowditch Saturday 24 February, 7.30pmMalvern Gardens, High St, MalvernARIA award-winning songwriter Clare Bowditch will be a guest artist at this event and perform two of her original songs with the Stonnington Symphony Orchestra and a new solo work.The night will be hosted by Sian Prior with Artistic Director, Conductor and Violin soloist Roy Theaker, the Stonnington Symphony Orchestra and orchestral arrangement by Nicholas Buc.[BREAK]Entry is FREE and all are welcome to enjoy the exciting outdoor concert series.
