The Circle of Men started in the Redlands City area in 2005 to meet the needs of elderly men living in aged care facilities. The organisation is a registered charity providing a non-religious and not-for-profit service. It does this by providing a safe environment in which men in aged care facilities can gather and help each other alleviate the loneliness and social isolation they can face at this vulnerable stage of their lives. Currently, the organisation has about 50 volunteers who regularly visit elderly men in aged care facilities in Victoria Point, Capalaba, Cleveland, Birkdale, Alexander Hills, Wellington Point, Carina, Carindale, Coorparoo, Mt Gravatt, Sunnybank Hills & Boronia Heights.

Regular requests are being received from other aged care facilities for visits by our volunteers. Unfortunately, at this time, there are not enough volunteers available for us to expand the service.

New volunteers are desperately needed to join the teams visiting the aged care facilities.

If you have a spare two hours a week and would like to help please contact President John Simpson on 0459333588 or Recruitment Officer Kevin James on 0490105715. They will be glad to speak with you and answer any questions you might have on how you would be able to assist.

The Circle of Men is also in need of volunteers to work with the management committee, give strategic advice and direction to help the Circle survive and build on into the future.

The Service Provided by Volunteers
As a volunteer with the Circle of Men you will join a small team each week and visit elderly men living in aged care facilities. Each visit lasts for about an hour and a half and you will meet up with whomever of the male residents want to join in. The discussions held during the visits normally cover a range of topics with the most earnest dialogues centring on topics of most interest to the men. These meetings have no religious or intent other than to provide sincere friendship to lonely men.

Volunteers show the men compassion, respect and dignity by providing a regular, friendly outside contact with somebody who really cares about, and is interested in, them. During each visit the volunteers LISTEN and display a genuine interest in the men. The Circle of Men is all about being a real mate and providing genuine friendship with care and compassion to lift the spirits of somebody who might feel alone and isolated.

But it's not all talk and no action. Volunteers often organise activities during their visits including, sing-alongs, quizzes, discussions on current events and sport, poetry recitals, reflections on their lives and many other interests. There is the obligatory cup of tea and cake or sometimes, perhaps, a drink of some sort. Where the men are mobile, there can be the occasional wander outside to a park, a tour around or to have a meal.

Where a resident has significant health issues, for example, dementia, Parkinson's disease, stroke, hearing loss and sight problems and are in wheelchairs or chair beds they probably rarely get to see the outside of the buildings. Volunteers can be that all important person who gives these men the opportunity to feel the freedom of being outside, even if it's just for a short time.

Our volunteers see how they have added a fullness to their own lives by enhancing the lives of those men who have been left alone by their circumstances.

We are looking for 'Good Blokes' to come and join our volunteers to enrich the lives of the new mates they are going to make.
