The Cheese Barrel is located idyllically amongst the vineyards of Swan Valley, a short drive from Perth CBD, however a map will be needed as sign posting is minimal. It provided a perfect setting to sit out on the balcony and spend, quite literally, a whole afternoon eating off cheese boards and drinking delicious wines to match.
The menu has a variety of options to suit your appetite from snack size portions to lunches. Our group chose the 'Gather and Share' option which had a variety of six cheeses on which we could either choose or have recommendations made by the very knowledgeable friendly staff. As well as some accompaniments, more can be added, though for a small fee. Don't worry if you are not a sommelier the staff are also able to suggest wines that will compliment the food selection ordered.

The Cheese Barrel's extensive list of cheeses gave us all great opportunity to try out some new ones, I highly recommend selecting any of the Blue cheeses to strong flavoured cheese fans. Though there are cured meats, fruits and breads also available, too, if you want a bit more variety. Additionally with a large cheeseboard and wine coming to $20 per head it makes the meal extremely reasonable.
Not only was the food exceptional but with such a tranquil setting to look out over on the balcony of the venue, and some good weather, it becomes very easy to eat and drink the afternoon away. However with little indoor seating, maybe keep this trip for a sunny day.

Finally one perk of The Cheese Barrel we didn't utilise but agreed was a great idea was the availability to buy a premade hamper filled with cheeses and bread and the option to add a beverage. Varying between $40-$60 for two. Perfect idea for refreshments when travelling through this scenic area either on a romantic expedition or just with the family/friends.
The Cheese Barrel provided us with a really enjoyable and memorable day to celebrate a friend's birthday. As well as a more extensive knowledge on cheese and wines, I'm sure we shall be becoming regulars next summer.
