Walkabout (1971) (Monday 14 March)
This Australian/British feature directed by British filmmaker Nicolas Roeg, stars Jenny Agutter, Luc Roeg and David Gulpilil.
Walkabout was in competition as the British entry at the
Cannes Film Festival in 1971. The film continues to be embraced by modern audiences and was described by Paul Ryan in the essay
Walkabout: Landscapes of Memory as "...
an astonishing visual poem, by turns violent, innocent, and elegiac. Above all, it is truthful."
A Zed and Two Noughts (1986) (Monday 28 March)
This is a curious feature written and directed by Peter Greenaway, which Nathan Lee of
Village Voice described as ".
.. an enjoyably decadent, ridiculously convoluted thingamajig."
Dial M for Murder (1954) (Monday 4 April)
A classic Hitchcock feature, starring Ray Milland, Grace Kelly and Robert Cummings. If you have only seen the Hollywood remake
A Perfect Murder (1998), directed by Andrew Davis, starring Michael Douglas, Gwyneth Paltrow and Viggo Mortensen, check out the original.
Dial M for Murder also inspired a Bollywood remake in 1985 entitled
Aitbaar.
Carnival of Souls (1962) (Monday 18 April)
For a change of pace see this low budget 1962 horror flick produced and directed by Herk Harvey and starring Candace Hilligoss. This cult classic was also remade in 1998, under the banner of
Wes Craven Presents 'Carnival of Souls '.
Shock Corridor (1963) (Monday 25 April)
Directed Samuel Fuller
Shock Corridor is a personal favourite and an exquisite dark and twisted film. The Martin Scorsese directed
Shutter Island (2010) shares the same thematic concerns of
Shock Corridor and also the same
pulp tone. The 1963 psychological drama stars Peter Breck, Constance Towers and James Best.
