While I have only been in the upstairs function area of the Celtic Club, I believe this still gives me the knowledge to review the food selection. The verdict: Incredible.
On my last visit, I was smart enough to try the Beef and Guinness Pie. For $17.50, I was treated to an absolutely delicious pastry filled with beef and vegetables. This was set atop a huge pile of mashed potatoes, which was surrounded by peas. Overall, one of the tastiest pub meals I've had in a long time. Maybe ever. Also, one of the most filling meals I have ever had. I could have easily split it with someone else, would have done if I was not dining alone. I am sure this is far from the only great dish on the menu, and while I cannot vouch for the quality of the other food, I know they offer Gnocchi, Fish & Chips, and Squid, among other things.
Beyond that, I know that they have a decent beer selection, but beer names do not sit well in my memory, so the only beer I am certain that they have is Guinness.
The Celtic Club hosts many events, including Irish music every Thursday and Friday nights, Tuesday night trivia, and, the one that brings me there: Board Games (This happens about one Saturday a month. Not technically hosted by the Celtic Club, but it takes place there)
Sitting in the CBD near the corner of Queen and La Trobe street, the Celtic Club is a pub all those that live in Melbourne should go to. It might not have the student discounts that I've come to know and love at other venues, but this is far made up both in quality and quantity.
