Many of us love dogs and treat them like one of the family. Our pampered pooches love attention and love us back. We fork out big dollars for vet bills, food and grooming, which often costs more than a human haircut. You may even be the type who doesn't go out unless you can take your fur-babies. So if you had the opportunity to head down to a pub for a pint and dinner with your pup, you would be off in a flash. Even better, if you didn't have to tie them to a courtyard tree but actually, take them inside the hotel to dine with you. If this is you, then The Carrington is your new dining and drinking destination.

Creativity and individuality are part of what makes Surry Hills thrive. Since The Carrington Hotel, circa 1877, reopened its doors just four months ago, its version of local pub dining with your canine friend has garnered a loyal following, reflecting the neighbourhood diversity and love of animals.

No more heading out to a dog-friendly cafe to find there aren't any outside seats left, or leaving them outside chained to a tree. Your pampered pooch can enter a fine establishment with his or her sniffer held high, taking a seat right next to you.

The new Carrington has been transformed by partners Luke Butler and Roger Gregg. The Hotel has been given a much-needed facelift with fresh paint, glossy tiles and new exterior gas wall lights retaining some historical charm.

As The Carrington was already a local favourite and considering that many members of the community owned dogs, they decided to include an interior garden bar where four-legged friends are welcome. To the side in Arthur Street, you will find the entrance to the dedicated doggie garden bar.

Inside you will find a vibrant natural interior that integrates nature in a funky fresh way. Smooth lino flooring cools your pooches on a hot day. It's also ideal to wash away any excitable accidents if they should occur.

Plenty of flowerpots and hanging plants surround the mix of patio chairs, bench and high window tables.

The floorplan is designed for socialising, long communal tables with plenty of space to stretch out.

The General Manager Lara Casarotti explained the menu . It all sounded delicious, but we decided to let her choose and surprise us.

Head Chef, Dave Penistone has created a tantalising classic pub menu that gets your mouth watering. Made for lounge and grazing, ranging from homemade dips, three cheese fondue to pub classics (chicken parma), fish, lasagna and their signature dish the 'Carro Burger'. There are also salad options and a new pasta dish; 'Broccoli & Pecorino Macaroni'. For those watching their weekly budget, you can get a $12 special - House Rump or a Burger. Kids are welcome too, they will love the $8 Cheeseburger & fries or Meatballs & fries.

It was a hot day, so we enjoyed a jug of Pimms. A vision of freshness, beautifully decorated with flower petals, cucumber slices and icy fruit - making it the perfect summer's day choice.

Lara then smartly brought out the Dog menu items. The choice of 'Rump Steak & Vege' or 'Steak Tartare' at $5 each was too good to resist. At first, my dogs weren't sure if they would be in trouble for eating such a delight. One nudge and they almost inhaled their lunch.

The dogs were in awe of what else might appear. Salivating in rapt attention at our feets. Our first servings of treats arrived. The house favourite bar snacks of 'Beetroot dip & cheese fondue' with bread.

Alongside came the 'Goat's cheese croquettes'. The goat's cheese was covered in a golden crunchy crumb and inside, gorgeously gooey goat's cheese - heaven in one bite. We dipped our crusty bread into the cheese fondue scooping up adorable morsels of savoury bliss. Such luscious finger food and perfect as a bar snack or starter. The homemade beetroot dip cut nicely through the cheese, cleansing the palate for the next course.

Out came 'Vegetarian Lasagne' with peas, asparagus, tomato
and three-cheese sauce, served with a simple green salad. The layers were perfectly cooked smothered in molten cheesy bliss and the vegetables were crisp and flavoursome.

We were feeling our ribs expanding as the next round arrived. 'Roasted Kingfish', pan-fried clams and green beans. This fish was generously thick, crispy skinned with a succulent subtle tasting texture. The addition of slightly salty clams enhanced this simple dish making me omit a few grunts of pleasure.

Meat lovers will be in carnivore heaven with the steak section of the menu offering choices of the 200gm rump (only $12 - 7 days a week), 250gm 'Rangers Valley' rump, 250gm hanger, 300gm sirloin on the bone and 500gm T-bone. Each steak is served with their signature pepper blend, salad and fries or smashed spuds topped with your choice of sauce. Lara ordered us the 300 gm Sirloin served with smashed spuds. The meat was cooked medium to rare allowing the juices to flow with each tender bite.

If wine is your thing, then you have the luxury to opt for a glass of any wine on the list . The favourites are no longer only available by the bottle, you can indulge in just a glass if you wish. Who doesn't love the option of a glass of the 2015 Foxey's Hangout Red Fox Pint Noir or 2015 Shaw & Smith Sauvignon Blanc!

We were full to the brim, then Lara mentioned the Chocolate Brownie. We both gave in with the excuse, we must try it!

The outside of the 'Brownie' had a light crunchy crust and inside was warm and fudge, resonating with a deep chocolate flavour. The gooey layer of Nutella added extra sweetness to the whispers of chocolate that lingered on my tongue after each bite. A dollop of peanut semifreddo with flecks of flower petals and a scattering of nutty praline chunks added to the simple but exquisite taste sensation.

For those who prefer not to feel the whip of a wagging tail, you can still sit in the front bar in relative peace. There is also a cosy corner called 'The Poke' for intimate sized groups.

The team at The Carrington offer Happy Hour 7 days a week from 5 - 7 pm with $5 tap beer, house wine & sparkling; accompanied with $1 wings. So why not pop down, have a Pint with your pooch. It's the ideal Pub for feasting with Fido and socialising with other dog owners or just chilling on your own with a quiet one.
