On a winter's evening in London, Aston intervenes in a fight bar. One of the would-be boxers is a homeless man who goes by the name of Bernard Jenkins. Aston invites Bernard back to his home, which could easily be described as a doer-upper, and gives him a bed for the night.

The next day Aston invites Bernard to stay and ultimately offers him the role of house caretaker, which Bernard accepts, much to the dismay of Aston's ill-tempered and enterprising brother, Mick. What follows next are Bernard's attempts to cultivate favour with the brothers by trying to play them off against each other.

The entire story unfolds in a bedroom of the London abode, and the intricate set design really makes the audience feel that they are in a home that requires a bit of caretaking. Much attention has also been taken with the costumes, and in the words of Mick, the homeless man does indeed appear as though he is "stinking out the place".

The Caretaker is a character driven play, with a focus on the three men's inability to communicate and understand each other, and how ultimately how blood is thicker than water.
