Call of the Sea is a collaboration between five Dutch and eight Western Australian artists and commemorates 400 years since Dutchman Dirk Hartog's visit to Australian shores. The exhibition covers a wide range of media and styles and is on until 24 July at the Moores Building Contemporary Art Gallery in Henry Street in the picturesque west end of Fremantle.

Several of Leentje Linders' large, lyrical etchings explore the relationship between the Netherlands and Australia from the earliest to more recent times. Sandra Mckendrick's large installation of rope, paper, wood and wooden clogs (not as cheesy as it might sound) hangs in the downstairs gallery. Stunning aerial photographs of the state's coastline and estuarine environments by 89 year old Dutch-Australian photographer Richard Woldendorp fill one of the upstairs rooms. Amok Island's stylised local beaches, sea creatures and native plants make for a surprising contrast as do three simple, yet sophisticated maritime-inspired marble sculptures by Ageeth van den Oever.

On the more traditional side are Peter de Rijcke's seascapes in Van Gogh colours and Brian Simmonds' pastel and oil beach and boatscapes and charcoal sketches. Downstairs is a rubbing of the Duyfken's rudder by Susanna Castleden which stretches almost to the ceiling, several lively multi-paned photographs of Bathers Bay's marine life by Sandra Mckendrick and Gera Woltjer's intriguing images entitled Between Home and Horizon where you seem to be looking into a box at an image from the past. And there is much more.

The exhibition's work explores the relationship between humankind and the sea from early times to the present and is open daily between 10 and 4. Pop into the adjacent atmospheric café for a coffee and sweet treat afterwards.
