Spot the horror trope. The whole film is a wonderful salutation to the genre. Both fans and the uninitiated will find something in this film. Genuine scares abound and possibly even an underlying message about desensitised violence.

Once upon a time, five university aged friends decided to have a weekend away at an isolated cabin. Hence the title. There are two stories: the story and the story behind the story. One set in the cabin, the other set in a control room. The horrors unfold and it dawns on you how the seemingly unrelated stories are in fact very related.

The control room is almost foil for the audience. In movie commentary about the reality or perhaps the psychosis behind the genre. Most horror films are about mindless violence where the audience couldn't care less about why it is happening, only about who dies and how. They can be an exercise in gore or simply very bad. Very bad luck for the protagonists to come across a bloodthirsty axe murderer or vengeful spirit. Few films can pull off the survivalist theme well.

Cabin in the Woods defers as the standard plotline is only the first act. There is more to expect. It takes a stab at answering the how and why of the horrors in the story. Although there are a few shortcomings, the revenge theme of the second act is worth watching. Many classic creatures of the night make an appearance in a chaos sequence that cost a large proportion of the budget.

The plot continually heightens with just enough detail to keep it on track. There's enough story to sustain a sequel or a TV show, fitting as one of the writers created Buffy The Vampire Slayer. The filmmakers clearly enjoyed making this film. The prosthetics, makeup and CGI are realistic and well done. A sequence showcasing several classic creatures of the night and some surprising choices, clearly used up most of the budget. The film is not meant to be taken too seriously. Even when chaos reigns, it's a lot of fun.

The Cabin in the Woods is both motion tribute to the genre and a new kind of horror movie. There is something for everyone: great special effects, genuine scares and the unexpected. Perfect for a fright night.
