The Burnt Half - Film Review (Melbourne Documentary Film Festival 2023)

The 2023 Melbourne Documentary Film Festival (MDFF) runs for the month of July, online and in selected Melbourne cinemas. In the past four years, the MDFF has premiered over four hundred documentaries. Many of these have had particular relevance to Australian audiences.

Natural events such as floods and fire are an inherent part of Australian life but their impact on both the natural and man-made environment can be controlled. The Burnt Half is a 90-minute observational documentary about the 2020 bushfire that destroyed more than half of Kangaroo Island. We meet the people of this unique remote community and listen to their stories of loss. Not only have they lost their livelihoods and homes but they have also lost documentation and photographs relating to years of family history. One can see that the Kangaroo Islanders are deeply sad but they are also resentful and angry that their concerns in relation to fire management were not addressed. An inner tension simmers below the surface of the film. The people are resilient and inspiring and the community just wants to get their lives back on track. It is to be hoped that documentaries such as The Burnt Half lead to change in the bureaucracy that surrounds care for and stewardship of the natural environment.
