Rock songs from some of Australia's best-known male vocalists will be performed by JD Smith in his new show, The Boys From Oz.

Australia has long been home to some of the world's best singers, songwriters and rock performers. With big choruses, touching lyrics and stories which touch our hearts, men in music have left an undeniable mark on our musical memories. Now, JD Smith is bringing his own musical interpretation to the big rock anthems for audiences to enjoy and just maybe sing along loudly to.

JD Smith is an Australian singer and former member of the music ensemble The Ten Tenors . JD has also been a contestant on the television show, The Voice and was chosen as a member of Keith Urban's singing team.

Now performing as a solo artist, JD Smith's new show will feature recognisable songs from some of Australia's most celebrated male singers. With a song list that includes hits from John Farnham (You're The Voice), Daryl Braithwaite (Horses), The Bee Gees, INXS, AC/DC and more it is marked by back-to-back classic musical rock anthems.

I asked JD about the upcoming shows, including that at the Kedron Wavell Services Club in Brisbane and here's what he had to say.

Where did the idea come from to create a show around the great songs and male singers from Australia?

My manager came to me with the idea of creating a show called The Boys from Oz songs by iconic Australian male performers and I instantly loved it. I grew up listening to artists like John Farnham and Daryl Braithwaite, I also learnt a lot about singing by listening to them.

It's an epic show that not only pays tribute to artists like Jimmy Barnes, INXS, Peter Allen, John Paul Young, Little River Band and many more but also celebrates them!

It's a perfect show for me to be able to show audiences what I can do vocally, it's also fun to chat about how these songs have inspired and shaped me as an artist.

There is such depth and history of talent in Australia of male singers. How did you go about making the song choice selection?

I think we have some of the best songs and artists in Australia, I'm proud of our music scene and it's always nice to bring songs back into the limelight and remind audiences how great they are. I started by choosing songs that I love and that I've been singing for years. There are so many great singers and songs in this country, that it would be impossible to include them all.

How do audiences react to the songs when they hear you sing them since some are like anthems?

Right at the beginning of this show I tell the audience that it's all about reminiscing, which is it! It's amazing how many songs you grew up with that you absolutely love/loved and have forgotten about. It's nice that a particular song can remind you of a time and place and make you feel something great!

%%Most audiences sing along, some even want to dance! Songs like 'You're the Voice', 'Horses' and 'Still Call Australia Home', are impossible to listen to without singing along, so I highly encourage
it!%%

There's a strong 80s reference in the collection. What was special about this time for male singers in Australia?

The 80s were a time when male singers in particular had massive voices. Huge range with big power ballads. I feel like they all influenced each other, you can hear similarities in the voices of John Farnham, Jack Jones and Rick Price. These songs have stood the test of time, simply because they are fantastic songs.
