I was lucky to see the musical The Boy From Oz a few years back in Brisbane. Hugh Jackman, fresh from Broadway, made the flambouyant role of Peter Allen his own. He was superbly supported by Chrissy Amphlettt, as Judy Garland, and Colleen Hewett, as Peter's mum. That's a hard cast to follow but Brisbane Arts has brought it to the small stage again.
It is such a great true-life story, with unforgettable songs, that it has been rocking audiences world-wide. I Go to Rio will have you dancing in the aisles. ("I go to NY" just doesn't have the same ring to it, does it?) You will sing along to I Still Call Australia Home (although I find myself singing "I still call a horse trailer home"). You may even shed a tear, like I did, to Tenterfield Saddler, Peter's homage to his grandfather. I Honestly Love You was such a huge hit for compatriot 'Olivia Neutron Bomb' that the royalties enabled Peter to buy his first beach house.
Many of us watched the TV mini-series Not the Boy Next Door in 2015. From humble beginnings to world renown, Peter Allen has wowed us. Hollywood couldn't have dreamt up a better musical tribute to a great Australian singer and songwriter.
