Dinner theaters get a bad reputation, usually because the food is lackluster and the quality of the show is not always great. But there is one exception in New York City - a place called The Box, a hot spot for celebrities and thrill seekers alike. The Box is a night club, where a show takes place from 1am to 4am, with breaks in between. Tame, lame or boring is not what The Box offers. The Box is a dinner theater, because food and drinks are served, and yes, there is also a show. But it is not your grandparents' kind of dinner theater.
The club opened in 2007, and under the direction of Simon Hammerstein, it became the hottest spot in NYC, where celebs and VIPs became regulars. Simon's vision was to bring theatre to a night club, to mix it up with the drinks and the music and to make it so outrageous that people cannot help but watch. Nobody is texting or calling during a show at the Box. The acts are explicit by nature but also ingenious. If you are not bothered by perfect nude bodies and sexual openness, then you will appreciate the art. There are acrobats, circus performers, singers, strippers, and many other artistic and indefinable acts.
A warning must be given to those who are easily offended by bodily fluids being thrown at them, or by naked performers doing summersaults and landing with their feet wrapped around your neck. Such extreme things might happen and you might be the one who gets them. The upside is you will have tons of great stories to tell your friends and maybe make them go see it for themselves.
If you are daring and you love debauchery, you will call this place your second home. Enter, but beware. You will enter a world where the wild is the normal, the obscene is the accepted and the scandalous is beautiful.
For more information, go to the official website. You must be dressed to impress, as it is not easy to get in. You must have a reserved table, or know someone who knows someone to slide your way in smoothly. Table reservations are expensive and there is a minimum liquor consumption which can bring you into the low thousands. Drinks are also pricey, from $20-$30 a pop. If you don't have connections and you want to see what the fuss is all about, come early and be nice.
