The bar offers a vast range of bottled and draught beer, wine and spirits. If you're looking for a drink to cool off with this summer, you're sure to find it (at a really good price) at the Botanic Bar.
Unfortunately I have to agree with dsjoy, the bar is quite average and whilst adequate for a drink when on campus I would never go out of my way for it. The drink range is limited and the service very average.
The interior is certainly nice and now that L block has been torn down the view is quite relaxing.
The biggest improvement they have made as of late is to have music playing instead of the radio all the time. Nothing worse than having your conversation drowned out by radio presenters.
Well, I guess it's a matter of perspective cos I think the Botanic Bar's got a pretty wide variety of drink options compared to other uni bars. Actually, I've been to a heap of places that only have two types of beer on tap and just a few spirits. Botanic Bar rocks in comparison.
While I like the bar (and go there often as a QUT student) this review is just plain misleading.
It certainly does NOT have a "vast range of bottled and draught beer, wine and spirits". It has a perfectly adequate range, for a student bar (and let's face it, that's exactly what this is). But vast? No. Looking for a decent red, or a spirit more exotic than a basic? You wont find it. Want a good cocktail? Not going to happen, the bartenders are just students trying to make some coin, they aren't professionals.
As for river views, well, it would have if the view wasn't blocked by concrete and trees.
Is it a good bar? Yes, definitely, and is far nicer to look at than the old one. But should you make any sort of effort to go there specifically if you weren't already on campus? Probably not.
Also have to agree with dsjoy and broco...this is a really misleading review. As a mature age student on campus I have popped in for a fortifying tipple a few times and it is quite definitely a (very) young student bar first and foremost....no chance of a glass of bubbly - has to be a bottle. And the choices of wine by the glass, while cheap, are certainly not extensive! The last time I was there a group of jug-swilling fellas who kept missing their chairs thought it was so hilarious we should all hear about it over and over again. As for staying open late...well...I've gone looking for a drink after a particularly trying tutorial only to find them closing up at 9pm. The bar staff though are friendly and fabulous, and keen to keep the queue moving quickly. However, as a place to actively seek out with a group after work...hmmm...probably worth a try but don't go out of your way unless you are, or are really comfy with, the 18-22 age group.
