After a lovely day, enjoying the sites and flavors of Shorncliffe and Sandgate, I came across The Book Shack. I was drawn in when I saw a book in the front window whose author has the same name as my son. My kids like to read so I decided to step in to get it for my son, since the book literally has his name on it. I met Sharon Hazel, the owner, and it is obvious she really enjoys operating her book store! She likes to travel too and enjoys living in her community.
Sharon said she is "living her dream" and remarked that everyone should be living their own dreams. Sharon told me she is in her 16th year of remission from leukemia, so I'd say she knows better than most of us how true that life philosophy is.
Sharon has created a comfy little book shop, where you feel welcome to have a seat and become immersed in whatever great book you find there. There are used and new books, and you can ask her to keep an eye out for a book you want. You don't have to strain your neck sideways to read the titles on the spine of the books, because she has a unique way of stacking most of the books in piles instead of lined up. Different genre sections are well marked and it is surprising how many books she has packed into her little shop. The books are all good quality too, no musty, moldy odors in this place! You can see her website. When you buy a book from her, you can bring the book back and show her the Book Shack UPC code on the back to get 30% exchange credit off the purchase of your next book.
The Book Shack has an assortment of interesting handmade, fair trade and locally made items; colorful crafts and wonderful bags of all sizes and shapes made with recycled materials. Fair trade purchases mean the crafters and artisans from around the world can make a fair wage from things you buy and the money improves their lives. Sharon has even created her own recycled paper product, a Book Jotter. You can create your own rating system and keep track of the books you have read and all the details you want to remember about them.
