I've recently heard a fantastic analogy about our Sydney vs Melbourne situation, comparing us to the United States of America. Sydney is New York, whilst Melbourne is Chicago. Both are great cities and I am grateful to live in this country.
Although Sydneysiders often seem to be waging some sort of a "war" with Melbourne, I must say, Melbourne certainly fights back. The Book of MormonMusical is a perfect example of this. I say this because although there are Sydney-based stars in the musical, they're performing in Melbourne.
I saw this musical on Saturday, during the matinee performance. It was an absolute blast. Let me just clarify one thing for you: I am not usually into musicals. I loved London's Phantom of the Opera musical (but hey, it was London, I loved everything in London)! I also loved the Book of Mormon.
It was hilarious, witty and the music was so catchy, I wanted to sing along to it. My partner agreed with my assessment, and he very much loves musicals. It was very upbeat and exciting the whole way through, time flew and I was shocked when we got to the break. The singing, acting and dancing was all wonderful and everyone in the cast is so talented. They all deserve to be commended.
If you're highly conservative and easily offended, you should probably pass this one up in case it hurts your feelings. If you have an edgy sense of humour and don't mind a bit of swearing, please go ahead and enjoy the best musical I've ever seen in Australia.
I note that you should try and get tickets ahead of time for the best chance to get great seats. I got mine at the last minute and it was worth every cent but my trip to Melbourne was a little bit sporadic. Lucky there's so much delicious food there.
Beyond this point, we were asked not to take photos, so I obeyed. You'll just have to see it for yourself.
