This Spring, the British Museum and Bendigo Art Gallery are proudly presenting The Body Beautiful in Ancient Greece .Running from the 2nd August to 9th November 2014, this anticipated exhibition is part of the ongoing Bendigo International Collection series. It has toured venues across Europe, Asia and the Americas and the Bendigo Art Gallery will be the first Australian venue to stage the thought-provoking exhibition.
Curated by Dr Ian Jenkins, who is responsible for the ancient Greek collection in the British Museum and is a world authority on Greek architecture, sculpture and ancient Greek social history, The Body Beautiful in Ancient Greece presents a visually stunning exploration of the human condition. With a particular focus on the human form, this exhibition brings together over 100 historical works selected from the British Museum's world-famous Greek and Roman collection, including the impressive Discobolus; an iconic marble statue of a discus thrower from the second century AD.
The ancient Greeks invented the modern idea of the human body in art as an object of sensory delight and as an expression of the intelligent mind. For over 2000 years, the Greeks have experimented with its representation - from prehistoric abstract simplicity to the full-blown realism of the age of Alexander the Great.
With this exhibition, audiences will have the rare opportunity to explore a rich selection of artworks which depict and interpret the human condition and in turn have shaped the way we think about ourselves. The Body Beautiful in Ancient Greece will be complemented with a comprehensive selection of programs, including floor talks, curator's introductions, guest speaker events, family tours and activities, workshops, Auslan interpreted tours, audio descriptive tours and more.
